JIU JITSU (2020)

The latest Nicolas Cage movie I watched was Jiu Jitsu released in 2020. Its a sci-fi action movie, with a bit of humour and horror thrown in. I watched it via the UK Region B locked Bluray release by Signature Entertainment, it had no extras. I am going to keep this review brief.

It stars, Alain Moussi, Nicolas Cage, JuJu Chan, Tony Jaa, Frank Grillo, Rick Yune, among others.

It was written by Dmitri Logothetis and Jim McGrath, and directed by Dmitri Logothetis.

Dmitri Logothetis is mostly known for directing the movie Kickboxer Retaliation.

The synopsis; when Jake Barnes, a master Jiu Jitsu fighter, refuses to face Brax, an indomitable alien creature, the future of humanity hangs in the balance. Injured and suffering from severe amnesia, Jake is captured by a military squad unequipped to fight the merciless intruder who has descended upon the planet. Jake is rescued by Wylie, and an ancient order of Jiu Jitsu fighters who must help him recover his memory and regain his strength in order to band together and defeat Brax in an epic battle that will determine the fate of mankind.

It’s a pretty crazy concept really a band of Jiu Jitsu fighters, fighting a Jiu Jitsu fighting alien, its not the first time I have seen something like this, there was the hilarious and at times weird Japanese movie, Alien Vs Ninja, released in 2010.

I’m not quite sure on why there’s so much hate for the film, it’s ok for what it is, it’s beautifully shot, there’s brilliant action sequences, and they do try to do different things with the camera. But I will admit it was lacking something, and that’s probably the worst thing about it, because its hard to pinpoint what it is. It contains strong action violence, moderate language, and no sex or nudity. 3 out of 5.
